Like I mentioned last week – The wifey and I along with @tweeterhold and his wifey got the chance to go see Garth Brooks at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas.
It was great. Kinda. I don’t really know how to feel about it.
When I bought a ticket to a Garth concert I expected excitement, lights, fire, explosions…I guess I expected it to be a Kiss concert. Not so much.
The show was all acoustic – just him and a guitar. Which was great – except for the fact that he didn’t finish a single song. Not one! The closest he got was his encore – Friends in Low Places – He sang the first and (infamous) third verses but skipped over the second verse.
The show is really a journey from his childhood through to the point when he hit the big time. He took us through all of his influences – James Taylor, Bob Seger, Simon and Garfunkel – and sang a little bit of each of them and showed how they were brought into the Garth Brooks songs we all know and love. The two most repeated words through out the concert? Haggard. Jones. These names were whispered with reverence while making a X (maybe more of a +) with his arms. These two guys had a big influence on him and his childhood and he talked about that a lot and played parts of quite a few of their more well known songs.
All of the that being said – the show was fantastic! Garth has this amazing ability to mesmerize you with his voice. The setting was very intimate – every seat in the house was close enough to see his facial expressions and I think that everyone in the joint felt like they were just hanging out with Garth for the evening. With that “just hanging out” vibe came a surprise (at least to us) visit and performance by Trisha Yearwood.
All in all – it was a cool experience and we all had a great time.
Still waiting for the explosions and fire.
